Bargaining update - March 6

posted Mar 6, 2014, 11:52 AM by Sarah Calhoun

The Union's Negotiating Team met with the Employer and the Provincial Conciliator on Friday, February 28 and Wednesday, March 5.  Through hard work on both sides of the bargaining table, the Parties were able to conclude and sign off three very tough articles!

More dates will be set on Friday of this week, and we are eager to get back to the table to keep up the momentum that we have gained.

Through your efforts and support of the mobilization events, we have been able to make these positive strides. Getting back to the table and the gains made at the table- were only possible because of our visibility on campus and at mobilization activities.

We look forward to seeing you at the Pizza Party, and will update our website with further dates for Conciliation as soon as possible.

In Solidarity,
Your negotiating team

Jen Burry, Alison Belyea, Carrie Monteith-Levesque and Larry Gagnon

Strike Preparation Course

posted Jan 16, 2014, 9:23 AM by Sarah Calhoun

Monday, January 20th , 2014 marks the start of our 4th year at the negotiating table.

We organized because we were being bullied, putting in hours of unrecognized overtime, and among other things, were tired of being taken advantage of.   We began negotiations with hope, filed for conciliation when we hit a wall, and now it is time for us to prepare for the next step.   We have made gains through our certification as a union, but now is the time to solidify those in writing. WE want a fair and respectable work environment, and we NEED that in our Collective Agreement.

The strike preparation course is 4 hours in length and will address the following items and more:

  • what you can/cannot do in the event of a strike along with best strategies that can be used before/during a strike,
  • all you need to know about picketing,
  • the different roles and committees that members can participate in,
  • information on strike pay and emergency strike fund,
  • the importance of communication and most important of all to put a strategic plan together.

The best way to avoid a strike is to be well prepared for one.
We are strong together, so let's prepare to stand together!

This course will be offered at three different times for your convenience.

  • Thursday, January 23rd (5:00 pm - 9:00 pm) at the Fredericton Inn
  • Saturday, January 25th (8:00 am - 12:00 pm) at the Fredericton Inn
  • Saturday, January 25th (1:00 pm - 5:00 pm) at the Fredericton Inn

Email sarah.calhoun@stusau.ca to register for one of the above sessions.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact one your Executive Members or Bargaining Team.

Being Unionized makes a difference

posted Aug 26, 2013, 6:59 AM by Sarah Calhoun

The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) has just released this information for New Brunswick....

There were 92,700 union members working in New Brunswick in 2012.  That’s 30% of all employees. Their weekly payroll of over $88.6 million accounted for 38% of the total for the whole province.

On average, unionized workers earned $7.76/hour more than non-union employees. That union advantage translated into $26.8 million more every week paid into local economies to support local businesses and community services.

June 27th General Meeting minutes

posted Jul 16, 2013, 6:03 AM by Sarah Calhoun

On behalf of the STUSAU executive, I apologize for the June 27th General Meeting minutes taking longer to circulate to you than expected.  Our executive and bargaining teams wanted to make sure we were able to provide you with the most up-to-date information.

After over 2 ½ years of bargaining, many of us don’t realize how hard our bargaining team has been working behind the scenes on our behalf.  They have put in well over 1,000 hours of meetings with the employer and/or our

STUSAU Lead Negotiator Larry Gagnon.   This averages outto 35 hours a month your STUSAU bargaining team has been hard at work for you to provide a healthy and productive work environment!  Currently, your bargaining team consists of Jen Burry and Alison Belyea.

As indicated in the attached minutes and at the last general membership meeting, your bargaining team decided it was time to file for conciliation after negotiations have reached an impasse with our employer.

The conciliation papers have been filed and we are ready to move forward with this new phase of contract negotiations.  PLEASE do not hesitate to contact one of your PSAC Executive or Bargaining team members if you have any questions, concerns or would like to get involved!!!!!  Their contact information can be found here http://www.stusau.ca/contact

Please make sure you check your personal email regularly.  To be sure we have your current contact information, please send an email with your personal email, home phone number and home address to secretary@stusau.ca.

STUSAU has a Facebook page!!  This will be another way to keep our members up-to-date.

June 27th General Meeting Minutes attached.

Regards,
Sarah Calhoun
